Our Mission
MoneySavvyHQ exists to help side hustlers, freelancers, and gig workers take control of their finances. We focus on the part most money-making blogs ignore: what happens after you earn the money. Taxes, bookkeeping, legal structure, and the financial decisions that come with a second income.
Why We Built This
I started MoneySavvyHQ after a painful lesson. For 12 years, I worked in logistics management in the Dallas area. Stable job, steady paycheck, taxes handled by my employer. In 2020, I started driving for DoorDash on weekends and selling products through Amazon FBA. That first year, I made about $18,000 from my side hustles. I was thrilled, until tax season hit.
Nobody told me about quarterly estimated tax payments. Nobody explained that I owed self-employment tax on top of income tax. The IRS hit me with a $1,800 underpayment penalty, and my total tax bill was almost $6,000 more than I expected.
That experience sent me down a rabbit hole of self-employment tax law, business structure, and financial planning. I read IRS publications, talked to CPAs, and slowly figured out how to manage side hustle finances properly. MoneySavvyHQ is the resource I wish had existed when I started.
A Note on the Name
Bruce Samuels is a pen name. MoneySavvyHQ is written and fact-checked by a small editorial team, and the first-person voice on this site belongs to that team, not to one individual. We use a single byline because the site has a single point of view: the person who got the tax bill and had to work out what went wrong. Nobody on the team is a CPA, an enrolled agent, or a licensed financial advisor, and we say so wherever it matters.
How We Work
Trust is everything in financial content, so here is what we actually do, and what we don't:
- Tax figures (rates, thresholds, deduction limits, mileage rates, due dates) are checked against IRS publications and revenue procedures, and the article shows the tax year they apply to. When a number changes mid-year, as the mileage rate did in July 2026, we update the article and note the change.
- Product pricing in reviews is copied from the vendor's own pricing page at the time of writing. Software pricing changes often; if a number looks off, check the vendor page and tell us.
- We do not fabricate case studies, income figures, or user reviews. Quotes from public forums are attributed to the forum and, wherever possible, linked to the thread.
- We are not CPAs or licensed tax advisors. Articles explain how the rules work; they do not replace advice for your specific situation.
- Reviews are written from published pricing, feature documentation, and public user feedback. We don't claim to have run a tool for months when we haven't, and we say when a judgment is ours rather than the vendor's.
